The AUKUS defense partnership, consisting of the United States, Britain, and Australia, has announced a significant initiative to jointly develop and deploy advanced unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs) by 2027. This announcement was made by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth during the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. The UUVs are designed to enhance the allies' capabilities in surveillance, reconnaissance, and strike operations beneath the sea surface. The initiative is part of AUKUS's 'Pillar Two' framework, which focuses on next-generation military technologies, including artificial intelligence and cyber capabilities. The joint statement emphasized that the UUVs would bolster anti-submarine warfare and electronic warfare capabilities, addressing threats to underwater cables and pipelines. British Defence Secretary John Healey noted the importance of this project in ensuring that AUKUS delivers advanced battlefield technologies. The AUKUS alliance, formed in 2021, aims to counter China's growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region, which has expressed concerns over the pact, labeling it as potentially dangerous and a catalyst for an arms race.
