The Atacama Desert in northern Chile is becoming a focal point for energy storage investments, particularly with the recent inauguration of a nearly $500 million solar-and-storage facility by ContourGlobal. This facility is touted as Latin America’s longest-duration utility-scale battery system, capable of delivering 200 megawatts of power for up to 6.5 hours. The project is backed by a 15-year power purchase agreement with Copec EMOAC, part of Empresas Copec, a major industrial conglomerate in Chile. Currently, Chile has 3,072 megawatts of battery energy storage systems (BESS) operational or in testing, with projections for an additional 5,400 megawatts by December. The demand for reliable renewable energy is driven by a robust industrial base, particularly in mining. ContourGlobal's CEO emphasized the importance of storage in transforming renewable energy into a reliable power source, crucial for reducing costs and enhancing decarbonization efforts. The company is also considering more renewable projects in the country, indicating a growing trend in energy storage development.
