Sanjeev Arora, the industries minister of Punjab, India, has been sent to seven days of custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) following his arrest in a money laundering case involving ₹157.2 crore. The arrest occurred at his official residence in Chandigarh on Saturday, after the ED filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) alleging that Arora was involved in a scheme to launder money through fraudulent exports of mobile phones from May to October 2023. The ED claims that Arora, who was the chief managing director of Hampton Sky Realty Limited, used multiple shell companies to export at least 44,000 mobile phones, primarily iPhones, to foreign firms, particularly two in the UAE, to create a facade of legitimate income. During the court proceedings, the ED sought a 10-day custodial interrogation to investigate the money trail and identify other accomplices, while Arora's defense argued that the case is baseless and lacks sufficient evidence. The court deemed the allegations serious enough to warrant custodial interrogation, emphasizing the need to uncover the details of the alleged financial crimes.
