On Thursday, the Indian government introduced the Delimitation Bill 2026 in the Lok Sabha, which aims to readjust legislative assembly seats and includes provisions for delimiting constituencies in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) once the region comes under Indian control. This legislation, presented by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, is viewed as a reaffirmation of India's constitutional claim over PoK, a territory India claims based on the 1947 Instrument of Accession signed by Maharaja Hari Singh. Currently, 24 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly remain vacant due to the ongoing occupation. BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, have consistently emphasized that PoK is an integral part of India. Ahead of the voting on the Delimitation Bill and two other bills, BJP leader Boora Narsaiah stated that reclaiming PoK is a dream shared by all Indians, highlighting the bill's significance in asserting India's legal and moral claim over the territory.
