In the West Bengal Assembly elections, the mother of a young doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata is currently leading the vote count in the Panihati constituency by 8,067 votes. Running as a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contest and emphasized her commitment to advocating for justice and women's safety. During her campaign, she garnered significant support from local women, who resonated with her message and shared in her grief. The mother is competing against Tirthankar Ghosh from the Trinamool Congress and Koltan Dasgupta from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), both of whom are notable figures in the region. Her daughter's case, which has drawn widespread attention since the incident on August 9, 2024, has led to the arrest of a civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, who was sentenced to life imprisonment on January 20, 2025. The family's ongoing concerns regarding the investigation prompted the Calcutta High Court to transfer the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further inquiry.
