Residents of Kansal, a town in Punjab, India, have been experiencing daily power outages lasting up to nine hours for over a month, despite recent upgrades to the local power infrastructure by the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL). Areas such as Shivalik Vihar and Sukhna Enclave faced fresh outages even after the completion of major upgrade works on Monday. Residents reported that the outages have become routine, severely affecting water supply, household chores, and local businesses. Gurpreet S Malhotra, a local resident, expressed frustration over the lack of communication from PSPCL regarding the outages. PSPCL officials attributed the disruptions to the upgrade of the 66 kV Majra–Mullanpur line, which was expected to take 15 days but extended to nearly 45 days. Sub-divisional officer Yaman Goyal explained that a recent outage was due to transformer repairs necessitated by road reconstruction. Meanwhile, residential societies in New Chandigarh, which were also affected, saw power restored after six weeks. The prolonged outages have forced residents to rely on backup generators, significantly increasing their monthly expenses, and have led to losses for local businesses. Residents are questioning the planning and timing of such extensive maintenance work, particularly why it was not scheduled during the winter months.
