The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that conditions are favorable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over parts of the Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands towards the end of this week. The monsoon typically reaches the Andaman Islands by May 20, with its official arrival on the Indian mainland marked by June 1 in Kerala. This year, however, the IMD forecasts that monsoon rainfall will be below normal, estimated at 92% of the long period average (LPA). The timely arrival and distribution of monsoon rains are critical for the planting and yield of essential crops such as paddy, pulses, and oilseeds, which rely heavily on the four-month rainfall season from June to September. A low-pressure area currently located over the Southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen in the coming days, further supporting the monsoon's onset.
