On Monday, the Supreme Court of India issued a stay on the Gujarat government's efforts to reclaim approximately 45,000 square meters of land occupied by the Sant Shri Asaram Ashram in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The court's decision came after it identified significant deficiencies in the state's show-cause notice, which was deemed to lack essential particulars. The land is part of a 650-acre area designated for the proposed Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, linked to Ahmedabad's bid for the 2036 Olympics and preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The Gujarat High Court had previously ruled in favor of the state, allowing reclamation based on claims of encroachment and violations of land-use conditions. However, the Supreme Court questioned the state's shifting positions and the legality of its actions, suggesting that the ashram was being unfairly targeted. The court has given the state three days to file a counter affidavit, with the next hearing scheduled for May 5. Asaram Bapu, who founded the ashram in 1972, is currently serving life sentences for multiple sexual assault convictions but is out on medical bail.
