Students at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) have voiced their objections to the university's decision to conduct entrance examinations for the 2026-27 academic year entirely online. Initially, a circular issued on May 5, 2026, indicated that exams would take place at designated centres. However, recent communications revealed that students could take the tests from any location. Abhishek Shelkar, a second-year MA political science student, criticized this change, questioning the justification for the increased entrance fee of ₹800 which was purportedly meant to ensure a transparent admission process. He highlighted concerns about the lack of checks against malpractices. Additionally, Basavaraj Sonkamble, a first-year MA student, recounted technical difficulties experienced during the previous year's exams, which disproportionately affected students from rural backgrounds. They argued that the integrity of the examination process is at risk without designated centres and proper supervision, leading to calls for a return to traditional exam formats to uphold fairness.
