The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has announced plans to construct 200 modern bus shelters in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, aiming to enhance passenger amenities and encourage greater use of public transport. Mahesh Awhad, PMPML's chairman and managing director, emphasized that this initiative marks a significant improvement in the public transport infrastructure of the region. The new bus shelters will be modeled after the modern designs found in Mumbai and will feature essential amenities such as seating, route information displays, CCTV cameras for safety, and mobile charging points. The project will be implemented in phases, focusing on high-footfall locations to ensure maximum benefit for commuters. The construction is set to begin this month, with the goal of providing protection from rain and heat, thereby making bus travel more comfortable. Regular bus commuters have welcomed this decision, highlighting the current inadequacies of existing bus stops, which often lack proper shelters. One commuter noted that the new shelters will be a significant relief during the summer and monsoon seasons, improving the daily travel experience for many.
