The 42nd anniversary of Operation Blue Star was marked by the display of posters featuring Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale at the Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar. Attendees raised pro-Khalistan slogans in remembrance of Bhindranwale, who was killed during the operation. In response to the sensitive atmosphere, Punjab Police heightened security measures, deploying approximately 4,000 personnel across Amritsar. ADCP Vishaljit Singh stated that checkpoints and barricades were established to prevent illegal activities. Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar Sinha confirmed the comprehensive security grid set up in Punjab, particularly in Amritsar, to ensure a peaceful observance of the anniversary. The operation, ordered by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, aimed to address the demand for a separate Sikh state led by Bhindranwale, who had reportedly stockpiled weapons in the Golden Temple complex. The operation faced significant criticism and was followed by Gandhi's assassination later that year.
