Kerala is facing unprecedented electricity demand amid a severe heatwave, with daily power consumption reaching 117.15 million units and peak demand soaring to 6033 megawatts. The state's power minister, K Krishnankutty, indicated that these figures represent the highest levels recorded in the state's history. The heatwave is exacerbated by a 38% deficiency in seasonal rainfall, with only 59 mm recorded against a normal of 95.6 mm from March 1 to April 19. As a result, many residents are relying heavily on air-conditioning and coolers, particularly during the evening hours. To manage this surge in demand, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is seeking permission from the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) to enter into long-term agreements for power procurement from other states. The minister has warned that load-shedding may be necessary if demand continues to exceed supply, urging the public to limit the use of high-voltage appliances during peak hours from 6 pm to 11 pm.
