In response to soaring temperatures exceeding 42 degrees Celsius in Ahmedabad, the Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden, commonly known as Kankaria Zoo, has implemented a series of cooling measures to protect its residents, including tigers, otters, monkeys, and reptiles. The zoo has developed a comprehensive summer management system that includes regular mist spraying to lower ambient temperatures and an underground geothermal pipe network that helps maintain cooler conditions within the enclosures. Animals are kept active during cooler evening hours, while otters spend their days in water pools. Caretaker Ranjitsinh Jadeja, who has dedicated nearly 40 years to the zoo, describes the animals as family members, highlighting the emotional connection between staff and wildlife. Additionally, lions and tigers are equipped with coolers in their enclosures, and water pools are regularly replenished with ORS mixtures to combat dehydration. The zoo's veterinarians remain vigilant for signs of heat-related stress, ensuring the health and comfort of the animals during the intense summer heat.
