The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has come under fire for its implementation of the on-screen marking (OSM) system for Class 12 board examinations, which critics claim was rushed and inadequately tested. Despite recommendations for pilot projects, the board conducted only a limited two-day exercise involving 100 teachers in Delhi before rolling out the system. Teachers reported significant workflow disruptions, technical issues, and a rise in re-evaluation requests, with over 404,000 applications for scanned answer copies submitted post-results. This marks a staggering increase of over 208% from the previous year, raising alarms about the quality of evaluations. The CBSE acknowledged initial technical glitches, including scanning problems and system overloads, which led to thousands of answer sheets needing rescanning. Concerns were further fueled by a notable decline in the Class 12 pass percentage, the lowest since 2019. Despite the backlash, CBSE officials have confirmed that the OSM system will continue for future examinations, highlighting the need for improved training and preparation.
