Authorities in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, have seized a significant shipment of codeine-based cough syrup, comprising 3,168 bottles packed in 132 cartons. The consignment was ordered by a pharmaceutical company located in the Kaudia area and was delivered to a transport company's warehouse in Janki Nagar. Following the discovery, officials from the police and the drug department initiated an investigation into the procurement and intended distribution of the syrup. Additional District Magistrate Alok Kumar stated that the Food Safety and Drug Administration has collected samples for testing and has prohibited the sale of the syrup until the investigation concludes. The pharmaceutical firm has provided purchase documents, but authorities are scrutinizing the entire supply chain to ensure the legality of the transaction. This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the misuse of codeine-based cough syrups, with similar cases reported in the district previously, leading to enforcement actions against illegal operations.
