UK Energy Minister Michael Shanks has stated that transitioning to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar will significantly enhance the UK's national security by making the energy system more resilient against potential aggression and sabotage. He pointed out that decentralized energy systems are harder to target than large fossil fuel power stations and are less susceptible to supply shocks, especially in the context of the ongoing oil crisis linked to the US-Israel conflict and the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Shanks highlighted the consensus among military experts and former military chiefs that investing in renewable energy is crucial for building a resilient homeland. During a recent visit to Ukraine, he observed the impact of Russian attacks on energy infrastructure and noted that Ukraine is successfully developing decarbonized energy systems at a pace the UK aims to match. Additionally, Shanks mentioned ongoing efforts to secure the UK's undersea cables and energy interconnectors against potential threats, particularly from Russian submarines. He reaffirmed the importance of nuclear energy in the transition away from fossil fuels, emphasizing that security considerations are fundamental in the UK's nuclear strategy. This week, 56 countries are convening in Colombia for a conference focused on transitioning away from fossil fuels, with the UK's climate envoy in attendance.
