The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and World Athletics are hosting a five-day Course Measurement Workshop in Bengaluru, India, from April 20-24. This specialized workshop, which is invitation-only, includes 14 participants from across the country who will receive intensive training in internationally recognized standards for road race measurement. With nearly 90 races represented, the participants come from diverse regions, including Ladakh in the north and Kochi in the south. Accurate course measurement is critical for ensuring that race distances are credible and compliant with global benchmarks, which is vital for the integrity of race results and athlete qualifications for international competitions. The workshop covers theoretical and practical aspects of course measurement, including bicycle calibration and data analysis, with certification based on performance. Conducted by Hugh Jones, a renowned marathoner and AIMS Secretary, the workshop aims to build a skilled pool of certified measurers in India, where only three certified measurers currently exist. This initiative is supported by various organizations, including the Karnataka Athletic Association and Decathlon, and underscores AIMS and World Athletics' commitment to fostering the growth of distance running in India.
