The Environment Ministry's sub-committee has recommended granting environmental clearance for the expansion of cargo handling capacity at JSW Dharamtar Port in Dolvi village, Raigad district, Maharashtra. The capacity is set to increase from 33.95 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 54.0 MTPA. However, the expansion is conditional upon addressing significant environmental concerns, including the pollution of mangroves due to coal and iron ore dust. The sub-committee's report highlighted that the mangroves, which span approximately 2.59 hectares, are currently suffering from coal dust contamination. The report also noted that while JSW Foundation has been involved in a mangrove restoration project since 2016, with a survival rate of 85% for the 2.5 million saplings planted, the pollution from port operations poses a serious threat. Recommendations from the sub-committee include creating protective screens to segregate mangroves from the port area and developing a specific conservation plan. JSW Dharamtar Port Private Limited has acknowledged these issues and has agreed to implement the necessary measures.
