The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has awarded Jor Bagh, an upscale locality in central Delhi, the 'Anupam Colony' certification for its outstanding waste management practices. NDMC vice-chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal announced the recognition, emphasizing the initiative's focus on sustainable and decentralized waste management. The Jor Bagh Residents’ Welfare Association played a vital role in achieving this certification by implementing effective waste segregation practices. The area has reached zero-waste status, meeting all necessary criteria for the designation. Under this initiative, household waste is segregated at the source, with wet waste converted into compost and dry waste categorized into 12 distinct types. Additionally, horticultural waste is composted in wire-mesh bins installed in public parks and along roadsides, with the compost being distributed to residents free of charge. Any surplus compost is utilized by the NDMC’s horticulture department. Jor Bagh is the seventh locality to receive the 'Anupam Colony' certification, joining the ranks of other recognized areas such as Satya Sadan Officers Flats and Bharti Nagar, showcasing a collective commitment to environmental responsibility.
