He described the situation as being stuck in 'copyright ownership hell,' where rights to the film are now divided among multiple companies, complicating the path forward. Øvredal expressed his frustration, emphasizing that while the creative aspects of the project are ready to go, legal hurdles are preventing any movement. He mentioned that discussions about the rights occur every few months, suggesting that there is some progress, albeit slow. Øvredal remains deeply committed to the sequel, which is based on the beloved children's book series by Alvin Schwartz and illustrated by Stephen Gammell. Meanwhile, he is set to release his new horror film, 'Passenger,' on May 22, 2023.
