The newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal is preparing to launch a series of welfare schemes aimed at enhancing social support, starting with the Annapurna Bhandar, a direct-benefit transfer (DBT) initiative for women, and offering free bus travel for female passengers, both set to begin on June 1. In a related development, Garga Chatterjee, founder of the Bangla Pokkho ethno-linguistic rights organization, was arrested for allegedly making provocative statements during the recent Assembly elections and spreading misinformation regarding the electoral process and Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Furthermore, the Enforcement Directorate has arrested former minister Sujit Bose in connection with alleged irregularities in municipal recruitment. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established, and three suspects have been apprehended in a joint operation across Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
