Irani stated that the opposition's actions denied women a historic opportunity and accused them of attempting to undermine women's political rights under the guise of concerns about delimitation affecting southern states. The bill was ultimately defeated in Parliament, garnering only 298 votes in favor, falling short of the 352 votes needed for a two-thirds majority. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his disappointment, stating that the opposition would regret their decision not to support the bill. He emphasized the growing support for women's rights among the electorate and indicated that this was a missed opportunity for all political parties to unite in favor of women's representation.
