Google is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Google Translate by introducing a highly requested pronunciation practice feature. Currently rolling out on Android for users in the United States and India, this feature supports English, Spanish, and Hindi. Users will find a 'Practice' button in the app, allowing them to either pronounce translated words or listen to native pronunciations. When users select the 'pronounce' option, the app utilizes artificial intelligence to analyze their pronunciation and provide instant feedback, including phonetic spelling suggestions. For instance, if a user mispronounces the Spanish word for juice, the app will suggest the correct pronunciation as 'HU-go.' Google reports that about one-third of mobile users utilize Translate for practicing speaking and listening, highlighting the feature's potential to enhance real-world conversational skills. Additionally, Google Translate now supports over 250 languages, including endangered and indigenous languages, and boasts over 1 billion monthly users who collectively translate over 1 trillion words each month.
