The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has turned down a request from Sri Durga Arts, the production house of SS Rajamouli's upcoming film 'Varanasi,' for 150 water tankers to support underwater filming. The request, made on April 24, sought to fill a water pond at Hyderabad Film City Studio with each tanker holding 10,000 liters. However, due to the ongoing summer crisis in Hyderabad, where demand for water has surged, the board stated that it could not divert approximately 15 lakh liters (1.5 million liters) for film production. HMWSSB Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy clarified that no water had been supplied to the production, contradicting earlier reports. 'Varanasi,' featuring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is touted as the most expensive Indian film with a budget of ₹1,400 crore (about $168 million USD) and is scheduled for release on April 7, 2027.
