Li Jiaying has become the first astronaut from Hong Kong to travel to space, marking a significant milestone for the region's participation in space exploration. She launched aboard the Shenzhou-23 spacecraft on May 24, 2026, alongside two other astronauts, Zhu Yangzhu and Zhang Zhiyuan. The mission, which aims to study the effects of microgravity on the human body, is part of China's broader goal to establish a long-term human presence in space, including plans for a year-long mission. Li, a 43-year-old mother of three and a technical specialist with the Hong Kong Police Force, was inspired by China's first astronaut, Yang Lewei.
