A team of historians, led by K. Rajan (Professor of History at Government College, Pattambi), has discovered rare palm leaf manuscripts at the Vilwadrinatha temple in Thiruvilwamala, Kerala. These manuscripts, preserved as Granthavaris, had remained largely unread and were previously used only for rituals. The team identified four bundles of manuscripts, which date back to the late 17th century. Among them, one bundle chronicles the temple's history from the early 14th to late 18th century, compiled in 1822. The texts, written in Sanskrit with Malayalam script, provide insights into temple administration and medieval society, detailing the roles of various community members. They also highlight strict administrative customs and penalties, illustrating the importance of tradition in governance. Notably, the manuscripts mention visits by Cochin rulers, including Ramavarma, who performed penance at the temple in 1363. Additionally, the records document maintenance issues and structural decay, reflecting the temple's complex history.
