The Melrose, Massachusetts community is in mourning following the tragic death of 9-year-old Zakaria Bel-Qaid, who was killed by a falling tree while playing on the playground at Winthrop Elementary School on May 4. In response to this heartbreaking incident, community members have created a memorial outside the school, adorned with flower bouquets, hand-written notes, and personal items, reflecting the profound impact Bel-Qaid had on those around him. His family shared that he spent his last moments joyfully playing tag with his younger sister and friends. Bel-Qaid was an active member of the Incarnation Little League, and local organizations, including Follow Your Art, have expressed their grief and admiration for his creativity and spirit. A special event, “Time for Reflection: Rocks and Ribbons,” was held at Memorial Hall where attendees could customize rocks and take ribbons in Bel-Qaid's favorite color, green, to symbolize their shared sorrow. The Zakaria Bel-Qaid Memorial Fund has been established, with proceeds directed to the Green Mountain Academy, where he excelled in skiing. Community leaders emphasize the importance of unity in facing such a tragedy, highlighting the resilience of Melrose as they navigate this loss together.
