Swarup Biswas, vice-president of the Indian Football Association (IFA), was arrested on Thursday night in Kolkata amid allegations of extortion related to the film and television industry. The arrest followed a complaint from a makeup artist from the Regent Park area, who claimed she had been out of work for nearly two years and was coerced into paying money for employment opportunities. After failing to meet the demands, she alleged that she faced threats from Biswas. Following a preliminary inquiry, police arrested him and registered a case under relevant provisions of the Arms Act. The police indicated that they are investigating several allegations involving the collection of money from industry workers, suggesting a broader extortion racket may be in operation. Biswas, who is also the brother of former West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas, was elected as IFA vice-president in 2022 and was serving a term until June 2026. Further investigations are ongoing to verify the claims made by the complainants.
