In a significant move, the Karnataka Department of Higher Education has decided to discontinue 458 undergraduate courses across government colleges due to persistently low enrollment rates. The decision comes after reports indicated zero admissions for over 1,091 course combinations and single-digit enrollments for 190 others during the academic year 2025-26. Courses primarily affected include those in the Arts stream, such as Political Science, Economics, and Sociology, as well as some Computer Science combinations in tier 3 cities. The highest number of courses impacted are located in tier 2 and 3 cities, as well as rural areas, although some urban colleges in Bengaluru and Mysuru also reported low enrollment. To address the lack of demand, the department plans to introduce 230 new skill and job-oriented courses, including the Apprentice Embedded Degree Programme (AEDP). Additionally, colleges experiencing high demand will be permitted to increase their student intake by a maximum of 100 students, with 26 colleges set to introduce new Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) courses.
