The Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA) has expressed serious concerns regarding consumer deception in the edible oil market, prompting a letter to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. This follows the deregulation of packaging sizes effective January 1, 2023, which aimed to provide greater freedom to manufacturers but has instead resulted in a chaotic market with non-standard pack sizes. A survey of 40 edible oil pouches revealed a confusing array of sizes, such as 350 g, 375 g, and 900 ml, leading consumers to make poor purchasing decisions based on visual cues rather than accurate price comparisons. Many pouches appear similar but contain different quantities, misleading consumers into believing they are getting a better deal. Additionally, the mandatory declaration of the 'Unit Sale Price' has proven ineffective, as most consumers do not perform the necessary calculations while shopping. This situation has created an unfair competitive landscape, with honest manufacturers losing ground to those exploiting the lack of standardization. SOPA argues that the current system undermines consumer transparency and calls for reinstating standardized packaging to protect consumers and ensure fair competition.
