At the Google I/O 2026 developer conference, Google unveiled Gmail Live, a new feature that integrates conversational AI into Gmail, allowing users to interact with their inbox using natural language. This Gemini AI-powered tool enables users to ask questions about their emails, such as details regarding upcoming flights or appointments, without needing to type specific search terms. Devanshi Bhandari, product lead for Gmail, demonstrated how Gmail Live can understand and respond to nuanced queries, making it easier to locate information that might otherwise be difficult to find. This feature is designed to complement traditional search rather than replace it, reflecting Google's cautious approach following user feedback from previous AI implementations. Alongside Gmail Live, Google is also enhancing Gmail with features like ready-to-send drafts and improved task management. The rollout of Gmail Live is expected later this summer, initially available to Google AI Ultra subscribers, with plans to expand to other subscription tiers in the future.
