India's Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the third and fourth semiconductor chip packaging units, part of the ₹76,000 crore India Semiconductor Mission, are expected to be operational by July and December 2023. In addition, the country aims to begin domestic commercial production of micro light-emitting diode (LED) displays within 22 months. Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of capitalizing on the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), stating that the government is focused on enhancing India's data center sector, supported by a 20-year tax break for new data centers. This initiative has already attracted investments close to $200 billion. Furthermore, the government is developing new subsea cable networks to connect Indian data centers with global markets, including routes from Visakhapatnam to Australia and the US, and across the southern coast of India to the Middle East and Europe. Vaishnaw also noted that AI-related job growth in the IT sector is projected to be between 15-20% annually, highlighting the collaboration with global companies like Google to boost AI server production in India.
