An investigation in Maharashtra has identified 375 zilla parishad teachers suspected of submitting fraudulent disability certificates to secure benefits during the transfer process. This scrutiny, initiated by the state government, revealed that these teachers are spread across 34 zilla parishads, with Satara district reporting the highest number at 141 teachers. The verification process was prompted by concerns over the misuse of disability provisions under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Many teachers argue they were appointed under disability quotas after proper medical examinations, while others claim to have developed disabilities during their service. The government has mandated fresh scrutiny of disability certificates, leading to challenges from teachers against re-verification orders and disciplinary actions. The situation underscores the importance of disability status in securing transfer benefits, particularly for postings in remote areas. Disciplinary actions, including suspensions, may follow for those found guilty of fraud.
