Over the past decade, the defence relationship between the two countries has strengthened through military exercises and agreements, with increasing procurement of American military equipment by India. Rubio's remarks also reflect a broader strategy among Western nations to diversify their defence supply chains amidst rising geopolitical uncertainties in the Indo-Pacific region.
