Dame Jools Topp, the beloved New Zealand entertainer and one half of the renowned comedy and country music duo the Topp Twins, passed away on Saturday at the age of 68 after a long struggle with breast cancer. Topp was first diagnosed with the disease in 2006, and it returned in 2021. Born in Huntly, New Zealand, she and her sister Lynda captivated audiences for over fifty years with their humorous performances and heartfelt music. The sisters became famous for their improvisational style and colorful characters, including the Camp Leader and the beer-swilling Kens. Topp was also a passionate activist, campaigning against racism, sexism, and homophobia. Following her death, tributes poured in from fans and fellow entertainers, highlighting her warmth, humor, and strong voice. The Topp Twins were trailblazers for LGBTQ+ representation, openly identifying as lesbians during a time when many did not. Their contributions to entertainment and social causes were recognized when they were appointed Dames Companion to the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2018.
