On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of India sought a response from the Centre concerning the numerous vacancies in the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT). The bench, led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, has requested that high courts send judicial officers on deputation to temporarily fill these roles. This action comes in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Parveen Kumar Bansal, a former vice president of the ITAT, which highlighted that all officer positions, including registrars, have remained unfilled for several years. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing the petitioner, pointed out the urgency of addressing these vacancies. The Court expressed astonishment at the prolonged absence of appointments and assured Rohatgi that it would take administrative steps to expedite the filling of these posts. The Attorney General has been directed to provide assistance in ensuring that the vacancies are addressed promptly.
