Formula 1 (F1) is poised to return to V8 engines by 2030, marking the end of the hybrid era that began in 2014. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem announced this shift during the Miami Grand Prix, emphasizing the need for simpler, louder engines that enhance the racing spectacle. Current hybrid power units split energy between internal combustion and electric sources, leading to frustrations among drivers and fans due to complex driving techniques like 'lifting and coasting' to recharge batteries. The FIA has already made adjustments to reduce electrical power's influence, resulting in a more dynamic race in Miami. The proposed V8 engines, which were last used from 2006 to 2013, will utilize sustainable fuels and feature minimal electrification. If four of the six power unit suppliers, including major names like Mercedes and Ferrari, agree, the change could be implemented by 2030; otherwise, the FIA will enforce it by 2031. Ben Sulayem is confident that the transition will happen regardless of supplier approval.
