On Saturday, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers in Jalandhar protested against the recent defection of former cricketer Harbhajan Singh and educationist Ashok Mittal to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This move, which occurred on Friday, involved seven Rajya Sabha members, including Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak, effectively transferring two-thirds of AAP's strength in the Upper House to the BJP. In a show of public anger, protesters spray-painted 'Gaddar' (traitor) on the walls of Harbhajan's residence and made derogatory remarks at the Lovely Professional University (LPU) campus owned by Mittal. Local AAP leaders, including Kartarpur MLA Balkar Singh and former MLA Pawan Kumar Tinu, led the demonstrations, while Jalandhar mayor Vineet Dhir and Jalandhar Central official Nitin Kohli participated at Harbhajan's home. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann condemned the defectors, accusing them of betraying the people's mandate for personal gain. The protests highlight the party's concerns about opposition parties undermining a movement rooted in public support. Jalandhar police commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur Randhawa acknowledged the protests but claimed no knowledge of the graffiti. Both Singh and Mittal were unavailable for comment, with Mittal recently facing scrutiny from the Enforcement Directorate under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
