The Telangana High Court recently upheld a divorce granted to an NRI husband due to allegations of cruelty and desertion, ordering him to pay ₹1.33 crore (approximately $160,000 USD) as alimony to his estranged wife, who is battling cancer. The court, led by Justices K Lakshman and B R Madhusudhan Rao, dismissed the wife's appeals against a 2016 family court ruling that dissolved their marriage. The court noted that the husband had agreed to the alimony amount during a prior settlement in 2011, where both parties consented to seek a divorce. The couple, married in 1999 and residing in the United States, had a tumultuous relationship marked by allegations of abuse from both sides. The court emphasized that there was no possibility of reconciliation, given their 15 years of separation and the wife's current health condition. The husband was directed to pay the alimony within three months, failing which the wife could pursue legal action for recovery.
