OpenAI, the US-based artificial intelligence company, is reportedly collaborating with chipmakers MediaTek and Qualcomm, as well as Luxshare, a China-based consumer electronics component manufacturer, to develop an AI-first mobile phone. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from TF International Securities (HK), the partnership aims to create a device that integrates both hardware and software, allowing OpenAI to offer a comprehensive AI agent service. Mass production of the smartphone is anticipated to start in 2028. Kuo suggests that controlling the operating system and hardware will enable OpenAI to bypass restrictions imposed by existing platforms like iOS and Android, which currently limit the functionality of AI tools such as ChatGPT. The proposed phone interface will shift away from traditional app icons, allowing users to interact with the device through direct commands, enhancing the overall user experience. Additionally, OpenAI is exploring other hardware products, including a palm-sized device designed to respond to audio and video cues, smart glasses, and a wearable AI pin, indicating a broader strategy to build an ecosystem of AI-driven devices.
