The Maccabi Games, an international athletic competition for Jewish youth, will be held in Toronto from August 2 to 7, 2023, for the first time in 40 years. Organizers, including Alan Perlis from the Prosserman Jewish Community Centre (JCC), have noted significant security concerns, particularly from American Jewish communities wary of rising antisemitism in Toronto. In response, a comprehensive security plan has been developed in collaboration with local police and safety experts, with costs potentially matching those of some games' budgets. Approximately 2,500 athletes from 85 communities will participate in various sports, including a pilot session for female hockey. The event is seen as an opportunity to unify the community and strengthen Jewish identity during challenging times, especially following the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas. Local support has been robust, with over 600 families volunteering to host athletes from countries like Israel, Ukraine, and Mexico, reflecting a strong commitment to community resilience.
