Vijay, the chief of the Tamilaga Vel Paari Katchi (TVK) party, has formally requested the Election Commission of India to extend polling hours for the upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu to 8 PM. This request comes as reports indicate that voters are facing long queues and delays at polling stations, which could negatively impact voter turnout. In his letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, Vijay also called for the deployment of emergency public transport services to assist voters in reaching polling locations. He stressed the importance of having designated supervisory officers at polling booths to ensure the voting process is managed efficiently and without unnecessary delays, thereby encouraging higher participation in the electoral process.
