The United States has imposed a 123% anti-dumping duty on solar photovoltaic (PV) imports from India, significantly impacting major manufacturers such as Waaree Energies, Vikram Solar, and Premier Energies. The US Department of Commerce concluded that solar cells from India are being sold below fair market value, leading to an estimated weighted average dumping margin of 123.07% for four Indian manufacturers. This new duty, combined with previous countervailing duties, could elevate total duties on Indian solar imports to approximately 234%, surpassing those imposed on competitors from Indonesia and Laos. Despite these challenges, India's solar exports have grown sharply, reaching around $2 billion in FY2024-25, with the US accounting for over 97% of this share. The Indian government is actively promoting domestic solar manufacturing to reduce reliance on imports, particularly from China, through initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High Efficiency Solar PV Modules, which has an allocation of INR 240 billion (roughly $2.7 billion). Additionally, the government has reduced the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on solar equipment to 5%, further encouraging local production.
