Israeli forces have successfully captured Beaufort Castle, a strategic site in southern Lebanon, marking their most significant military incursion into the country in over 26 years. The operation, which occurred near the city of Nabatiyeh, was part of the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah that reignited on March 2, 2023. Despite a nominal ceasefire in place since April 17, Israeli troops engaged in intense fighting and airstrikes against Hezbollah in the surrounding villages. The Israeli military stated that its objective is to dismantle Hezbollah's infrastructure and remove threats to Israeli civilians. Following the capture, Defence Minister Israel Katz announced that Israeli forces raised their flag over the castle. The conflict has had devastating effects, leading to the deaths of over 3,350 people in Lebanon and displacing more than 1 million individuals. The situation remains tense as Israel continues to call for residents to evacuate southern Lebanon ahead of upcoming diplomatic talks in Washington.
