Thirteen children from the Baiga tribal community were rescued from bonded labor in cattle-rearing units in Kabirdham district, Chhattisgarh. The operation involved local police, Childline, the Women and Child Development Department, and the Association for Voluntary Action (AVA), which focuses on child rights. The children, aged between 8 and 15 years, had been trafficked from remote villages approximately seven to eight months ago, with their families being lured by promises of money and improved living conditions. They were forced to work more than 10 hours a day for wages between ₹1,000 and ₹2,000 (approximately $12 to $24 USD) per month. The rescue operation began after AVA tracked the suspects for two weeks. Following initial rescues, further raids led to the discovery of more children across four sites. Police have charged the accused under laws related to human trafficking, bonded labor, child labor, and the Juvenile Justice Act. All rescued children have been placed in child care institutions to ensure their safety and rehabilitation.
