In a notable electoral upset for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) won the Bhojpur-Buxar Legislative Council byelection held on May 12. RJD candidate Sonu Rai defeated Janata Dal (United) candidate Kanhaiya Prasad by 340 votes, securing 2,486 of the 5,956 votes cast. This byelection was necessitated by the resignation of Prasad's father, Radha Charan Sah, who had won a seat in the Assembly from the Sandesh constituency.
