On Thursday, Ishaq Dar, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan, extended his congratulations to Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe for their election as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the term 2027-2028. In a post on X, Dar expressed his wishes for their success in fulfilling this crucial role. He highlighted Pakistan's ongoing commitment to fostering peace, security, and multilateral cooperation during its current tenure on the UNSC, which lasts until the end of 2026. The elections, conducted by the United Nations General Assembly, saw Austria and Portugal triumph over Germany, which garnered 104 votes, trailing behind Portugal's 134 and Austria's 131. Kyrgyzstan achieved a historic win, securing its first UNSC seat by defeating the Philippines after a competitive four-round voting process, receiving 142 votes to 49. This election underscores the dynamic nature of the UNSC, where 10 of its 15 members are elected, while the five permanent members hold veto power.
