Deutsche Lufthansa AG is adjusting its summer flight plan in response to potential fuel shortages linked to the ongoing geopolitical situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Chief Financial Officer Till Streichert indicated that while fuel supplies are expected to remain secure at least until the end of June, the airline is preparing for alternative scenarios. This may involve adding refueling stops on long-haul routes to Asia and Africa if destination airports face fuel shortages. CEO Carsten Spohr noted that similar disruptions have occurred recently, such as a lack of fuel in Cape Town, which necessitated a stop in Windhoek. Lufthansa is also employing a strategy called 'tankering,' where planes carry extra fuel for the return journey, although this practice is limited by European Union regulations. In addition to operational changes, Lufthansa is tightening cost controls to manage rising fuel expenses, with plans to offset an anticipated €1.7 billion in additional fuel costs through increased ticket prices and cost-saving measures. Despite these challenges, the airline expects its full-year earnings to be significantly higher than the previous year.
