On Thursday, the last remaining insurgent faction in Mizoram, the Hmar People's Convention (Democratic) (HPC(D)), surrendered its arms, leading to the state's declaration as 'insurgency-free.' Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced this significant development during a ceremony in Sesawng, near Aizawl, where 43 cadres, including faction leader Lalhmingthanga Sanate, laid down their weapons. This event follows a peace accord signed on April 14, which aimed to resolve the group's demands for an autonomous district council for the Hmar community under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Lalduhoma emphasized the importance of unity among various Mizo tribes, stating that no single tribe should prioritize its identity over the collective Mizo identity. He called for a commitment to peace and stability, urging the community to abandon divisive ideologies. Home Minister K Sapdanga described the day as historic and credited Lalduhoma's dedication to peace for the successful agreement. The HPC(D) had previously turned to armed insurgency after feeling that peaceful protests were ineffective. The recent surrender marks a pivotal moment in Mizoram's journey towards lasting peace and development.
