On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared insights from Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the transformative journey of Indian Railways. The sector has seen a remarkable 89% decrease in the railway accident rate over the past decade, with consequential train accidents dropping from 135 in 2014-15 to just 16 in 2025-26. This achievement is attributed to a significant increase in safety funding, which has risen to nearly ₹1.2 lakh crore for the 2026-27 budget, enabling the elimination of 9,000 unmanned level crossings and the construction of over 14,000 road overbridges. The introduction of the Kavach 4.0 Automatic Train Protection system has further enhanced safety across 1,450 route kilometres, particularly on high-density routes. Additionally, the recent launch of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains marks a shift towards modern, high-speed travel, reducing journey times significantly. The focus on inclusivity ensures that 70% of new coach production caters to General and Sleeper classes, making safe and efficient rail travel accessible to millions.
